Sam James: 0 to 70+ agents at 20
By Sam James · 2026-05-12
The setup
I'm Sam James. I'm 20 years old. I run APEX Financial — a life-insurance agency that recruits and develops agents nationwide. As of writing, we've got 70+ contracted agents and we're hitting $16-17K/day in team production. Personally, I'm clearing $30-40K a month.
This wasn't an overnight thing. But it was fast — fast enough that people keep asking me how.
This page is the honest version.
The starting line
I started APEX Nation as an Instagram bio that said four words:
> I Make Leaders. DM me "APEX".
That bio out-converts everything else I've tried. Because it says nothing about insurance, nothing about money, nothing about "join my team." It positions me as the coach, not the recruiter. People who message me are already half-sold.
What actually moved the needle
1. Picking the offer first, the audience second.Life insurance is a regulated, high-AOV product with recurring commissions for years. One licensed agent producing $5K/mo gives the agency $30K-50K in lifetime override. That math means I can spend real time (and a little money) on every recruit and still win.
2. Treating the funnel like software, not like sales.Every step of the recruiting flow is a system, not a vibe:
- IG bio → DM → qualification call → application form → license help → contract → onboarding cron → first deal celebration.
- Every step has a measurable conversion rate.
- Every step has an automation behind it (we've shipped 163 Supabase edge functions to date).
If the funnel leaks, I don't push harder — I fix the leak.
3. Being annoying about quality.I track every "fell off" policy in a `policy_quality_flags` table. Right now there are 172 of them. Each one is recoverable commission if my agents reroute the client to another carrier. We attack this list every morning.
4. Building in public.I don't have a moat. I don't have proprietary lead sources. What I have is Sam James, age 20, doing it on camera. The content is the brand is the recruiting funnel.
What I'd tell a 19-year-old founder today
- Pick the high-AOV regulated industry. SaaS is sexy but the math is rough at your scale. Insurance, mortgage, solar, real estate — products that pay $1K+ per close and recur.
- Build the system before you build the team. A team without infrastructure is a chat group with extra steps.
- Faith over hustle-porn. I'm Christian. I read the Bible before I read PnLs.
- Find one founder who's 5 years ahead. Not a guru. Not a course. A person who'll text you back when you have a hard day.
- Stop waiting for permission. You don't need permission. You need a checklist.
What's next
APEX is building toward 1,000 agents and $1M+/mo personal. The playbook scales. The systems are documented. The team is forming.
If you want in — as an agent, a manager, or eventually as a partner — the door is open. No fluff. No application fees. Just apply, talk, decide together.
Building your own thing? APEX hires for it. The agents we love recruit are people running their own playbook.
